A Comprehensive Study on Hybrid Energy Storage System for an EV by Using Ultracapacitor

In the forthcoming years, Electric Vehicles (EV) occupy a major marketplace in the transportation sector. Due to pollution-free and minimal maintenance, it is a perfect alternative to conventional Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs). Improving the performance of EV has been a recent trend and lot of research are in process. One of the ways to improve the performance of an EV is Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS). The HESS may be formed by the combination of Battery and Ultracapacitor (UC) or Fuel Cell and UC together. Also, by using HESS technology, EV manufacturers are overcoming conventional limitations like sudden draining of battery, battery overheating, and degradation of the battery. This paper provides a detailed study on different components utilized in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and followed by the comparison of various motors, batteries and UCs. Also, at the end of the study, the selection of appropriate components for HEVs are suggested.
